Review：
If you're ever on a boat floating down the River Styx, you might find yourself being ushered into Hades while Black Rebel Motorcycle Club serves as the house band.

With Howl and Howl Sessions EP BRMC stepped up their game by proving they were more than gritty shoegaze or aggressive britpop revival, taking and american meets dead poets sort of approach and proving themselves to be, if not the best, at least the most versatile major-label artists on the block.

Baby 81 is no different in this succession of genre devouring releases that really dare anyone speak an ill word of the boys from BRMC. They can do absolutely anything, and they always make it sounds distinctly like them, while rarely making anything come across as though it’s of this world. It’s all chapters in a greater story and as they’ve both developed as songwiriters, Hayes is turning into quite the little poet while Turner is getting tremendous at making you want to punch people in the face.

Since it’s easier to say which songs don’t hit on a BRMC album, the only two this time around are "Took Out a Loan" and "Cold Wind" which both have the best intentions but simply fail to hook. Everything else is another clean knock out of the park.

Certainly the most interesting this time around is the almost rock opera-esque “American X” clocking in at just under nine minutes (frequently a bad idea but here it works surprisingly well) and spins faster and faster out of control until you are eventually thrown off and into “Am I Only” …which serves as 81’s closer. An interesting ending given the tsunami survivor from which the album takes it’s title. Makes you wonder what Turner and Hayes are on about.

This might not top their last two albums, but, if this is BRMC’s idea of a misstep, we could be looking at one of the greatest bands alive. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club have always been excellent. Now they’re getting dangerous.
