飞艇囊体的选材主要是从强度、质量、价格三者之间需求个平衡点。如果是一般的小型遥控飞艇，强度显得不是很重要，主要是质量和价格，一般都选用PVC材料，至于像系留飞艇和大型遥控飞艇，好多单位用的都是进口材料，进口材料属性都会有的。
下面只载自国外的一篇文献：
Material ideal for use in pressurised non-rigig airship envelopes would have the following properties:
1. High strength
2. High strength to weight ratio to mininise the weigh of envelope
3. Resistance to environmental degradation through temperature ,humidity and ultraviolet light.
4. High tear resistance to give damage tolerance
5. Low permeability to minimise helium loss.
6. Joining techiques that produce strong and reliable jionts,not subject to creep rupture
7. Low creep to ensure that the envelope shape is maintained through its life
